The Dual Dynamics of Development: A Study of Migration, Remittances, and Labour Market Transformation in Kerala
Abstract: Kerala's development trajectory is shaped by dual migration- large-scale international emigration generating remittances and internal in-migration filling the resulting labour gaps. This study examines two interconnected hypotheses: (1) remittances are positively linked to improvements in key human development indicators, and (2) sustained out-migration has created a labour vacuum filled by in-migrants from other Indian states. Using state-level data from 2000 to 2023, correlation and regression analyses reveal strong associations between remittances and the Human Development Index, literacy, life expectancy, and poverty reduction. The second hypothesis is supported directionally, though statistical significance is weaker due to limited data and non-linear in-migration growth. Findings underscore remittances' structural role in Kerala's development while highlighting policy challenges in migrant integration and economic sustainability. Recommendations focus on enhancing the developmental impact of remittances, safeguarding their sustainability, and managing the socio-economic impacts of dual migration flows.
