Fatigue in India: A Cross-Sectional Study of Prevalence and Severity

Palak Arora, Vineet Yadav, Rajat Singal, Sandip Mitra

Abstract: Objective: To assess the prevalence and severity of physical fatigue in India across different regions, genders, and age groups. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected data from 30,899 individuals aged 18?99 [youth (18-25 years), young adults (26-40 years), middle-aged adults (41-65 years), and the elderly (66-99 years)] using five physical fatigue questions from the 10-item Fatigue Assessment Scale, administered verbally. Variations in fatigue severity by region, age, and gender were analyzed. Results: Among the 28,291 eligible participants, the Southern region contributed the largest proportion (46.60%) of fatigue. Fatigue severity increased with age, with elderly individuals showing the highest prevalence of severe fatigue (25.83%). The Eastern region recorded the highest prevalence (14.18%) of severe fatigue. Men reported higher rates of mild fatigue than women (34.25% vs. 27.63%). These patterns indicate significant demographic differences in fatigue severity across the population (p<0.0001). Discussion: Fatigue severity varies with age, region, and gender. Micronutrients like L-carnitine, vitamin B12, and folic acid may help manage fatigue, but further research is needed to confirm their effectiveness.
