Ambivalence in Rudyard Kipling's Imperial Poetics

Abstract: This article will locate the ambivalence of colonial discourse in the poetical work of Rudyard Kipling, the writer who most clearly articulated the imperial spirit of his age and is often regarded as the unofficial laureate of British Empire. We will especially examine and highlight Kipling?s conflicted positions that he held in relations to India and colonialism.Towards the end of this paper, we will assess the impact of such conflict on the power and authority of the Orientalist discourse.
