From Precedent to Proposal: Adaption of Indian Rajputana Interior into Contemporary Residential Architecture
Abstract: The rich heritage of Indian Rajputana interiors represents a unique blend of grandeur, craftsmanship, cultural symbolism, and climatic responsiveness. Characterized by intricately carved elements, jharokhas, arches, courtyards, vibrant colours, traditional motifs, and locally sourced materials, Rajputana design reflects the royal identity and architectural wisdom of Rajasthan. However, with the rise of contemporary residential architecture, many of these traditional interior elements are gradually being replaced by minimal and globally influenced design approaches. This thesis explores the adaptation of Indian Rajputana interiors into contemporary residential architecture by integrating traditional aesthetics with modern spatial planning, materials, technology, and lifestyle requirements. The study aims to identify key Rajputana interior features that can be reinterpreted in present-day homes without compromising functionality, comfort, or contemporary visual appeal. Through case studies, literature review, and design analysis, the research investigates how heritage-inspired elements such as decorative screens, handcrafted finishes, traditional furniture forms, ornamental details, and passive cooling principles can be incorporated into modern residences. The thesis further proposes interior design that balance cultural continuity with present-day needs, creating homes that are rooted in tradition yet aligned with modern living standards. The outcome of this project aspires to contribute towards preserving Indian cultural identity while promoting innovative residential interiors that celebrate the timeless elegance of Rajputana design in a contemporary context.
