Agricultural Markets and Regional Integration in Lualaba Province: A Critical Analysis of Opportunities and Logistical Constraints in Villages Around Mutanda Mining
Abstract: This study investigates the socioeconomic disparities among fifteen rural villages surrounding mining areas in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. Using data from 450 households, the analysis focused on household income, market participation, and proximity to mining infrastructure. Results show significant spatial inequalities: villages near mining operations such as Mutala, Kabatanda, CMKK, and Kawama report the highest average household incomes (USD 900?1,100) and market participation rates above 70%. Intermediate settlements like Kinsenda, Kyavie, and Lualaba, Mupanja record moderate incomes (USD 600?750) and participation between 50?60%, while remote villages including Kapaso, Masumbu, Kahindu, and Mibanze experience the lowest incomes (
