Effectiveness of Constraint Induced Movement Therapy on Sensory and Motor Functions of Upper Extremity among Patients with Cerebrovascular Accident

Abstract: The present study investigated the effectiveness of constraint induced movement therapy on sensory and motor functions of upper extremity among patients with cerebrovascular accident admitted in a tertiary care hospital, Kottayam. A quantitative research approach with quasi experimental pre test post test control group design was used for the study. The conceptual framework, Betty Neumanns system model theoretically supported the study. Sixty patients with cerebrovascular accident were selected using non probability purposive sampling technique. The data were collected using socio personal and clinical data sheet, action research arm test sensory and motor function scales and constraint induced movement therapy rehabilitation kit was used for the study. Constraint induced movement therapy is the application of restraint to the unaffected upper extremity of the CVA and providing a group of gross motor, fine motor and sensory therapy to the affected upper extremity. Constraint induced movement therapy starts on the 2 nd day of admission and continued for next 4 days. Total of 4 sessions of CIMT therapy was provided in a day each session was given for 1 hour with 1 hour interval in between the sessions. Pre test was conducted on second day of admission and post test on the sixth day of admission. The study result showed that CIMT had an effect on sensory and motor functions of upper extremity (p< 0.05). Study revealed that association of sensory and motor functions with selected variables was not statistically significant
