Integrating Evidence Based Rehabilitation for Children with Diverse Developmental Needs
Abstract: Children with special needs, encompassing developmental, physical, cognitive, sensory, and behavioral challenges, require tailored rehabilitation interventions to enhance their functioning and quality of life. Evidence-based practice (EBP) in rehabilitation integrates the best available scientific research, clinical expertise, and family values to optimize therapeutic outcomes. This paper discusses the importance of early identification and multidisciplinary intervention across domains such as speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and special education. It highlights the critical role of inclusive education through individualized education plans (IEPs) and social skills training programs in fostering academic and social development. Family-centered and community-based rehabilitation (CBR) models are emphasized for their cultural sensitivity and sustainability, supporting family empowerment and social inclusion. Synthesizing current research and frameworks, including WHO guidelines and meta-analyses by Reichow et al. (2013) and Wong et al. (2021), this paper provides a comprehensive framework for integrating EBPs in multidisciplinary rehabilitation to improve developmental outcomes and foster inclusion for children with diverse abilities.
