Determining Influence of Management Commitment on Development of Emotional Intelligence in Public Service - A Survey of Ministries in Kenya

Abstract: The purpose of the main study was to conduct a survey of factors affecting the development of emotional intelligence in Kenyas Public Service Ministries. Emotional Intelligence (EI) covers a wide range of skills and personality dispositions such as confidence, optimism, adaptability, motivation, peer relations and coping with stress. This paper analyzes whether management commitment influence the development of emotional intelligence in Kenyas Public Service. The survey was carried out in 42 Kenya Government Ministries targeting a population of 79 Human Resources Management staff representing 10 % of the total sample population across 42 ministries. Data was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods with the assistance of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). It concluded that management in the ministries has failed to play its role in developing employees emotional intelligence by lack of commitment in planning activities aimed at development of EI. There should be equal opportunities for employees in training.
