Abstract: AIM: To study the effect of dialysis in maintaining the fluid and electrolyte balance in CKD patients. OBJECTIVE: To assess the symptoms associated with age related decline in renal function and urine output. To determine the association between dialysis and maintenance of the fluid and electrolyte balance in CKD patients. To analyze and compare the biochemical parameters pertaining to renal function, before and after dialysis. METHODOLOGY: An observational, multicenter coherent study was carried out on 30 samples to assess the effect of dialysis on maintaining the fluid and electrolyte balance in CKD patients. The secondary data was collected by selecting patients with fluid overload at random. The data included height, weight before and after dialysis, number of years on dialysis, food preferences, social habits specific to alcohol use and biochemical parameters before and after dialysis such as sodium, potassium, creatinine, serum albumin and hemoglobin. A comparative study was done to see the effect on dialysis on the biochemical parameters. RESULTS: This observational study concludes that there is a significant difference in the fluid and electrolyte balance before and after dialysis. After dialysis it has been observed that the fluid overload of patients has been reduced and their biochemical parameters which were abnormal before had almost come to normal ranges.
