Epidemiological Characteristics of Patients with Acute Myocardialinfarction

Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of patients with acute myocardial infarction. There were 343admissions during the study period. (77 %) were males and (23 %) females, giving a male to female ratio of 3.11. The mean age of patients was 60.2 (10.2) years (range 3593 years). Smoking, diabetes, hypertension and history of coronary heart disease were the most common cardiovascular risk factors in the sample studied. More than half (53 %) of patients were reported to be current smokers and 15 % were ex-smokers.31 % were identified as having diabetes mellitus (type 1 or 2 unspecified). History of hypertension and coronary heart disease were reported in 55.4 % and 42.8 % of patients respectively. Dyslipidaemia as risk factor was reported in 66.3 % of patients. All of the patients included in the study had abnormal ECG.
