Abstract: Background Instrumental deliveries are associated with maternal and neonatal morbidity. The choice of instrument decide the morbidity rate. Objective. To compare maternal and neonatal outcomes of vacuum and forceps application in instrumental vaginal delivery. Material & Methods A retrospective hospital based study was carried out in the Department of Obstetrics & gynecology of Yenepoya Medical College, a tertiary health care referral centre in Mangalore, Karnataka over a period of one years from December 2015 to December 2016. Results Out of the 100 patients subjected to this study, majority of the patients were multigravidas belonging to the age group 27- 28 years. Maternal morbidity in terms of periurethral tear, second and third degree perineal tear were significantly more in forceps group. However neonatal outcomes were found to be similar in both types of instrumental deliveries. . Conclusion The conclusion from this study Ventouse should be preferred over forceps whenever there is an indication for instrumental delivery (except in fetal distress) as it is associated with less maternal trauma and most of the neonatal morbidities were insignificant in comparison with both instruments.
