Global Stability Analysis of Retaining Walls

Deepak Parkash Gupta

Abstract: Global stability assessment is an important component in the design and evaluation of retaining-wall and slope systems because potential failure mechanisms can extend beyond the immediate wall foundation. This technical review summarizes the principal conditions requiring global stability assessment, relevant geological and geotechnical parameters, commonly applied limit-equilibrium approaches, stabilization measures, and practical analysis procedures. Particular attention is given to groundwater, weak foundation strata, slope geometry, surcharge loading, seismic conditions, and soil or rock reinforcement. Reliable assessment requires representative ground models, appropriate strength parameters, realistic groundwater and loading conditions, and systematic searches for critical failure surfaces. Where stability requirements are not achieved, suitable drainage, reinforcement, foundation improvement, anchoring, or geometric modifications should be evaluated and verified through revised analysis. The required Factor of Safety should be selected according to applicable design standards, project conditions, loading cases, and consequences of failure.
