Difference in Achievement between Boys and Girls in Mathematics at Secondary School Level

Dr. Chandra Mukherjee

Abstract: The present study intends to investigate the disparity of achievement between boys and girls in mathematics in class vi, viii and x. by Achievement cum Diagnostic Test in Mathematics conducted by Centre for Pedagogical Studies in Mathematics from of 380 boys 380 girls (N=760} from 50 centres of South 24 Parganas based upon Six null hypotheses. The mode of analysis was dispersion, significance of difference of means and percentages of grades achieved by the students. Result reveals the fact that mean scores of boys are remarkably higher than the girls., boys are comparatively higher achievers than the girls in the higher grades i. e, in A+, A and B grades. But in case of girls it is reverse. Girls achieved Higher in the lower grades than boys in class vi and viii. The disparity ins not very prominent in class x. The difference is significant in the achievement of boys and girls in mathematics in case of class vi and viii. But this difference is not significant in case of knowledge and skill and total score (sum of the scores of bknowledge and skill, understanding and application), algebra and geometry. There is significant difference in the scores of boys and girls in algebra and geometry. So, there is disparity prevalent in between the scores of boys and girls in mathematics in class vi, viii and x.
