Evaluation of Disciplinary and Grievance Handling Policies in Hospitals: A Comparative Analysis with CBAHI Accreditation Standards

Pulivarthi Adi Lakshmi

Abstract: Disciplinary and grievance handling mechanisms are important components of hospital human-resource management because they influence fairness, transparency, accountability, trust and workplace stability. This paper examines disciplinary and grievance handling policies in Thuriban General Hospital (TGH), a 50-bed hospital in Saudi Arabia, with particular emphasis on their alignment with Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI) requirements. The study adopts a mixed-methods, descriptive and comparative framework incorporating staff perceptions, semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The study identifies inconsistent application of policies, inadequate staff awareness and training, procedural delays, barriers to grievance reporting and challenges associated with hierarchical and cultural factors as key areas requiring attention. The proposed improvement approach includes standardized training, accessible grievance-reporting channels, digital tracking, defined resolution timelines, periodic policy audits, staff feedback mechanisms and safeguards against retaliation. The paper presents the study's documented observations and proposed analytical framework rather than statistical test results, and situates them within a review of the peer-reviewed and institutional literature on grievance management, disciplinary due process and accreditation-linked human-resource governance in healthcare settings. The paper highlights the importance of transparent, consistently implemented and accreditation-aligned employee grievance systems in supporting staff morale and organizational effectiveness in hospital settings.
