Evolution of Warfare and the Emerging Character of Future War

Col Dr. Dalvinder Singh Grewal, Brigadier Gurtej Singh Grewal

Abstract: The changing nature of warfare is closely linked with advances in weapons, information systems, and military technology. Modern conflicts are moving from direct physical engagement toward non-contact and technology-driven operations supported by UAVs, precision-guided weapons, hypersonic systems, artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, space-based systems, and robotics. Future battlefields may extend across land, sea, air, cyber, and space, where rapid access to reliable information could become as important as conventional firepower. Networked sensors, automated systems, and unmanned platforms may improve surveillance, decision-making, logistics, and strike capabilities while reducing the exposure of personnel to dangerous environments. These changes also create new demands for cyber resilience, integrated command systems, defence against advanced weapons, robotic formations, and stronger research and development. Armed forces must therefore treat modernization and transformation as a continuous process. Future preparedness will depend not only on acquiring advanced technology, but also on adapting military organization, training personnel, developing new operational strategies, and integrating emerging systems effectively.
