Technology Use and Attention Regulation Across Generational Cohorts: A Comparative Study
Abstract: This study examines the relationship between technology use and attention regulation across generational cohorts using a mixed-methods comparative design. A purposive stratified sample of 200 participants was recruited, equally representing Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z. Quantitative data were collected using standardized instruments (Digital Engagement Scale, Cognitive Style Index, Mental Health Inventory, sustained-attention task, multitasking checklist), while qualitative data were obtained through interviews and reflective journals. Results revealed significant generational differences: Baby Boomers and Generation X demonstrated higher sustained attention compared to Millennials and Generation Z. Regression analysis identified multitasking frequency as the strongest predictor of reduced attention, with digital engagement also negatively associated. Mediation analysis confirmed multitasking as a partial mediator. Qualitative findings highlighted themes of notification salience, habitual checking, and compensatory strategies. The study concludes that digital engagement exerts both benefits and cognitive costs, with multitasking serving as a key mechanism linking technology use to attentional decline. Practical implications include digital literacy programs, workplace focus policies, clinical interventions, and public health campaigns. Limitations include cross-sectional design and reliance on self-report measures. Future research should adopt longitudinal and cross-cultural approaches.
