Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs) and their Control: A Comprehensive Review and Empirical Study
Abstract: A hospital-acquired infection (HAI)- traditionally referred to as a nosocomial infection-occurs when a patient contracts an infection during their stay at a medical facility that was neither present nor incubating at the time of admission. Beyond inpatient care, HAIs also encompass occupational infections among healthcare workers and infections that manifest after a patient has been discharged. Common vectors for these pathogens include contaminated medical equipment, hospital linens, airborne droplets, and direct cross-transmission between patients and clinical staff. This is a prospective observational study in ENT wards, reporting 19.6% HAI incidence and 26.35 cases per 1,000 patient-days, identifying surgical site infections as the predominant type with Gram-negative organisms? predominance.
