Comparative Evaluation of Frictional Resistance in Conventional and Passive Self-Ligating Ceramic Brackets with Rectangular Stainless-Steel Archwire: An In Vitro Study
Abstract: This in vitro study investigated the frictional resistance of conventional and passive self-ligating ceramic brackets when paired with a 0.019" ? 0.025" stainless steel (SS) archwire. Four bracket types were tested: conventional ceramic brackets (Unitek Gemini Clear 3M and Symetri Clear Ormco) and passive self-ligating ceramic brackets (3M Clarity and Damon Clear). Brackets were bonded to extracted human premolar teeth mounted in dental stone blocks, and frictional resistance was measured using an Instron universal testing machine. The results revealed that passive self-ligating brackets exhibited significantly lower frictional resistance than conventional brackets, with Damon Clear recording the lowest value (5.66 ± 1.88 N), followed by 3M Clarity (8.42 ± 2.18 N), Symetri Clear Ormco (16.43 ± 1.98 N), and Unitek Gemini Clear 3M (22.86 ± 2.44 N).
