The Epigenetic Architecture of Consciousness: A Theoretical Study of Patanjali?s Ashtanga Yoga and Modern Biological Markers of Aging
Abstract: The final, most advanced layer of Patanjali?s Ashtanga architecture addresses the master control system-the mind. Comprising Dharana (focused concentration), Dhyana (sustained meditation), and ultimately Samadhi (complete cognitive integration and absorption), these cognitive disciplines culminate in Chitta Vritti Nirodhah-the complete cessation of mental fluctuations. When the mind achieves this absolute stillness, the friction of the Kleshas (psychological afflictions) is entirely neutralized. Biologically, this represents the ultimate epigenetic intervention. The cognitive stillness achieved in the higher limbs of Yoga provides a master top-down command to the cellular infrastructure, down-regulating genetic pathways responsible for inflammation and up-regulating mechanisms of cellular repair, thereby maximizing telomerase activity and rebuilding chromosomal integrity. This paper explores the theoretical synthesis between classical Indian philosophy and modern molecular biology, addressing the mechanisms of action, current empirical evidence, and the inherent epistemological and methodological biases in this emerging interdisciplinary field.
