Effect of Intraoperative Music Therapy on the Haemodynamics and Post-Operative Pain in Elective Surgeries Under General Anaesthesia

Dr. Suparna Goel, Dr. Christina George

Abstract: Background: Perioperative anxiety and pain contribute significantly to haemodynamic instability and postoperative discomfort. Music therapy has may help to improve perioperative outcomes. Objective: To evaluate intraoperative music therapy on haemodynamic parameters, analgesic requirements, postoperative pain, and PONV during elective surgery under general anaesthesia. Methods: The prospective, randomized, single-blinded study was conducted at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab, from May 2023 to October 2024. Seventy ASA I?II adults undergoing elective surgery were randomized to music therapy (n=35) or control (n=35). The intervention group received intraoperative music through noise-cancelling headphones; controls wore identical headphones without music. Haemodynamic parameters and narcotic requirements were recorded. Postoperative pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), with rescue analgesic use and PONV recorded. Results: The music group had significantly lower intraoperative heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and respiratory rate (p
