The Interface is the Message: How UX Design Reconstructs Human Attention and Emotion
Abstract: Digital media platforms increasingly function as psychological environments shaped by interface design. Extending Marshall McLuhan's proposition that the medium is the message, this study examines the interface as an influential structure within contemporary digital ecosystems. Using qualitative interface analysis and theoretical perspectives from the attention economy and behavioral psychology, the study examines design mechanisms including infinite scrolling, autoplay, notifications, visual cues, personalization, and feedback systems across selected digital platforms. The analysis indicates that these mechanisms can guide attention, reduce interaction friction, reinforce repeated engagement, and shape emotional responses. Cross-platform similarities further suggest a broader movement toward engagement-oriented interface architecture. The study therefore conceptualizes UX design as an active architecture of influence rather than a neutral layer between users and digital content. It concludes that greater attention to user autonomy, transparency, and well-being is needed in the design and evaluation of contemporary digital interfaces.
