Urban Social Issues: Slum
Abstract: Urbanization is an important process in modern society. Due to industrialization, trade, employment, education, health, and various opportunities of modern life, the population of cities is continuously increasing. As cities expand, a large number of people migrate from rural areas to cities. However, the economic and physical growth of cities takes place at a pace at which sufficient and affordable housing, water, sanitation, health, education, transportation, and other basic facilities are not made available to all citizens. In this situation, unplanned, densely populated settlements with inadequate facilities are created in cities. These are commonly called slums. A slum is not merely a problem of poor-quality housing. It is a combined form of poverty, unemployment, migration, social inequality, inadequate urban planning, housing shortage, health problems, environmental problems, and social deprivation. Therefore, the issue of slums is considered an important social issue in modern urban sociology.
