The Black Hole Information Paradox: Origins, Battles, and Where We Stand Now
Abstract: The black hole information paradox arises from the apparent conflict between Hawking radiation and the unitary evolution required by quantum mechanics. This review traces the development of the problem from Bekenstein's black hole entropy and Hawking's radiation calculation through black hole complementarity, the firewall paradox, holography, the Page curve, the island formula, and fuzzball models. Particular attention is given to a 2025 proposal by Christoph Adami arguing that stimulated emission provides an information-carrying channel that was absent from Hawking's original treatment. The review compares the strengths and limitations of these approaches and finds that modern theoretical developments strongly favor information preservation, while the complete microscopic description of information recovery during black hole evaporation remains unresolved.
