Hepatic Hydatid Cyst in a 75-Year-Old Female: A Case Report
Abstract: Hydatid disease, or cystic echinococcosis, is a zoonotic parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The liver is the most commonly affected organ. Hepatic hydatid cysts may remain asymptomatic for prolonged periods and gradually increase in size, eventually causing abdominal pain, pressure symptoms, or complications such as infection, rupture, or biliary communication. We report the case of a 75-year-old female who presented with right upper quadrant abdominal pain and vomiting for six months. Ultrasonography revealed a hepatic hydatid cyst, classified as CE3b according to the WHO-IWGE classification. The patient was treated with preoperative albendazole followed by laparotomy, cholecystectomy, deroofing of the hydatid cyst, thorough irrigation with cetrimide, and omentopexy. No biliary communication was identified. The postoperative period was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on the sixth postoperative day with postoperative albendazole therapy. Early diagnosis and appropriate surgical management are essential to prevent complications and recurrence.
