The Future of Organ Transplantation: Integrating Stem Cells, Bioprinted Organs, and Regenerative Technologies

Dhiyarina Saravanaram

Abstract: Organ transplantation remains an essential treatment for end-stage organ failure, but the persistent shortage of suitable donor organs limits its availability. Emerging regenerative technologies, including stem-cell engineering, tissue engineering, biomaterial scaffolds, organoids, and 3D bioprinting, offer potential approaches for producing functional tissues and, ultimately, transplantable organs. This review integrates recent developments across these areas and examines their potential contribution to reducing dependence on donor organs. Particular attention is given to stem-cell differentiation, biofabrication, scaffold-supported tissue development, and organoid technologies. Major barriers to clinical translation, including vascularisation, immune compatibility, structural complexity, ethical considerations, and scalable manufacturing, are also considered. Continued integration of biological and engineering approaches may progressively improve the feasibility of patient-specific tissue and organ fabrication and contribute to addressing the global shortage of transplantable organs.
