Advantages of Crafts Based Intervention for Mental Health
Abstract: Mental health is being increasingly recognized as a critical global health concern with organizations like the World Health Organization estimating that over 1 billion people worldwide live with a mental health disorder. It warns that greater investment and action are needed globally to scale up services to protect and promote people?s mental health. Despite this, the median global government spending on mental health remains at just 2% of total health budgets. It could be worse in countries with severe resource crunch and hence, it becomes imperative that communities adopt less capital-intensive interventions that could help ease the burden. This paper examines the advantages of crafts-based interventions that can be adopted at the school and community level. While this is not a replacement for clinical therapy or medication, the World Health Organization and various Frontiers in Public Health studies recognize arts engagement as an effective and low-cost tool for improving mood, life satisfaction, and public mental health.
