The Mathematical and Educational Legacy of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee: A Critical Review

Sk Sahadat Hossain

Abstract: Sir Asutosh Mookerjee (1864-1924), widely known as the "Banglar Bagh" ("Tiger of Bengal"), was a distinguished scholar of the Bengal Renaissance whose contributions encompassed jurisprudence, higher education, and mathematical research. Although his achievements as a multiterm Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and as a judge of the Calcutta High Court are well recognized, his contributions to pure and applied mathematics have received comparatively limited scholarly attention. Between 1880 and 1892, Mookerjee published a series of original investigations that explored the interplay between analytical geometry and differential calculus, with particular emphasis on the theory of non-linear curves and differential equations. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of Mookerjee's mathematical research, focusing on his investigations of non-linear trajectories and the Monge differential equation. It also examines his broader role in the transformation of Indian higher education, highlighting his efforts to facilitate the evolution of the University of Calcutta from a predominantly examination-oriented colonial institution into a center for advanced teaching and research.
