Digital Habits and Academic Procrastination Among Health Care Students Aged 16-25 Years

Dr. Tejal Pardeshi, Shruti Walimbe

Abstract: Background: Social media is increasingly integrated into students' daily lives and may compete with academic activities. This study examined the relationship between time spent on social media and academic procrastination among health care college students aged 16-25 years. Methods: A correlational observational study was conducted among 28 undergraduate and postgraduate health care students selected by convenience sampling. Social media use was assessed using the Social Media Usage Scale (SMUS), while academic procrastination was assessed using a self-developed questionnaire. Daily social-media time was recorded in hours. Descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk testing, and Pearson's correlation were used. Results: Mean daily social-media use was 4.32 ± 1.89 hours. The mean SMUS score was 39.04 ± 9.44, with 17 (60.7%) participants classified as having high social-media usage. The mean academic procrastination score was 43.39 ± 13.63; 15 (53.6%) participants had moderate and 10 (35.7%) had high procrastination. A statistically significant weak negative correlation was observed between daily social-media time and academic procrastination (r = ?0.377, p = 0.048). Conclusion: Although the association was statistically significant, its weak magnitude indicates limited practical significance. Larger studies using objective screen-time measures are warranted
