Migration, Diaspora, and Cultural Hybridity in Twenty-First Century English Literature

Dr. Rumela Ghosh

Abstract: The twenty-first century has seen massive migration and interactions among different cultures, hence making migration, diaspora, and cultural hybridity key issues in English literature in the twenty-first century. This qualitative study investigates the portrayal of experiences of migrants and diaspora people in selected novels in terms of identity, belongingness, displacement, and cultural transformation. An interpretive research approach is utilized to analyze selected novels, such as "The Namesake", "White Teeth", "Americanah", "Exit West", and "Home Fire" using postcolonial and diaspora studies approach. The results indicate that migration is viewed as physical as well as psychological journey which reconfigures identities through exiles, memories and adaptation. The study also indicates that diasporic identities are always dynamic and constantly being negotiated in a multicultural society and hence hybrid cultural identities arise. Third space, multiculturalism, language, race, gender, and transnational experiences are some of the key concepts that illustrate the intricate process of negotiating belonging in the age of globalization. It is evident from the study that twenty-first-century English literature offers a critical insight into the dynamic interrelationship between migration, identity, and cultural hybridity in the age of globalization with special focus on cultural diversity and transnational belonging.
