Reconceptualising Literary Hermeneutics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Digital Humanities, Computational Epistemologies and the Future of Interpretive Praxis
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a game-changing technology in the discipline of Digital Humanities and has been transforming the ways in which literary works are analyzed and interpreted. The present review paper critically evaluates the contribution of AI in transforming literary criticism in light of advanced technologies like Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and Large Language Models (LLMs). The study is based on secondary data gathered from peer-reviewed journal papers, books, proceedings, and well-reputed academic databases from 2015 to 2026. Applying thematic analysis, the study identifies major applications of AI in literary analysis, such as text mining, topic modeling, sentiment analysis, authorship attribution, narrative and stylistic analysis, digital archives, and multilingual translations. The paper also highlights some important challenges related to AI-based literary interpretation, such as algorithmic biases, copyright and intellectual property problems, ethical dilemmas, and shortcomings of AI in understanding cultural context and human creativity. The results demonstrate that despite the significant improvement of literary research in terms of efficiency, availability, and extent of the investigation caused by the implementation of AI, it is impossible to substitute the skills of critical thinking possessed by humans. In fact, the future of literary research can be seen in the cooperation of AI and people when AI acts as a tool for supporting the critical thinking and creativity of researchers.
