The Impact of Digital Marketing on Consumer Behaviour: A Psychological and Sociological Perspective

Ahaana Mehra, Raghu Raja Mehra

Abstract: Digital marketing has restructured the relationship between brands and consumers. Search engines, social media platforms, mobile applications, recommendation engines and e-commerce marketplaces now mediate most of the information a consumer meets before purchase, replacing the linear, broadcast exposure of the mass-media era with a continuous, personalised and interactive stream of persuasion. This paper examines that shift from two complementary perspectives. The psychological perspective explains how perception, motivation, emotion, attitude, learning and perceived risk mediate individual response to digital advertising. The sociological perspective explains how family, peer groups, culture, social class and online communities frame what consumers consider desirable and legitimate. Drawing on a structured review of published literature and secondary data, the study develops an integrated stimulus?filter?response framework in which digital stimuli pass simultaneously through a psychological and a sociological filter before producing behaviour. The analysis finds that emotional and identity-linked appeals outperform purely informational ones; that peer and community validation remains the most trusted persuasive force in every age cohort; and that personalisation raises conversion while also raising concerns about privacy, autonomy and manipulative design. The paper concludes that effective and ethical digital marketing must integrate psychological insight with sociological awareness, and recommends stronger consumer digital literacy, transparent personalisation and regulatory attention to manipulative interface design.
