Facial Recognition System (FRS) in Telangana Higher Education: Challenges, Advantages, Policy Implications and Strategic Recommendations
Abstract: The Telangana Collegiate Education Department has adopted digital technologies to modernize institutional administration, including the implementation of Facial Recognition Systems (FRS) for attendance management. FRS uses Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and computer vision techniques to identify individuals using their facial characteristics. The technology aims to improve attendance monitoring, reduce manual administrative work, prevent proxy attendance, and generate real-time reports. However, large-scale implementation presents challenges such as infrastructure limitations, internet connectivity, biometric privacy, cybersecurity, algorithmic accuracy, staff acceptance, and legal considerations. This review paper examines the implementation of FRS in Telangana Collegiate Education, discusses its advantages and challenges, and proposes recommendations for effective deployment. The study concludes that while FRS can improve administrative efficiency, its long-term success depends on reliable infrastructure, transparent governance, strong privacy safeguards, user training, and continuous technical support.
