Tracing the Origins of the Khasi Tribe: A Critical Review of Current Perspectives

Dr. Teiborlang Dkhar

Abstract: The origin of the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya is not yet known. There is considerable controversy over the origin of the Khasi tribe, even among the Khasis themselves. Although the indigenous (non-converts) still believe that they have come from heaven and their original inhabitant was at Sohpetbneng, some of them doubt it and believe that they have come all the way from some South Asian countries; others say from the Middle East, etc. This paper is a critical analysis, where the writer focuses on different perspectives about the origin of the Khasis and tries to bring out their views on this matter. The writer tries to conclude that the Khasis have been living in their present land for quite a long time. So, it is difficult to trace their origin.
