Technology-Associated Issues: Distance and Online Undergraduate Mathematics Students' Experiences in Nigeria

Comfort Reju

Abstract: This study explores the technology-related issues experienced by undergraduate mathematics students enrolled in open and distance learning institutions in Nigeria. Guided by constructivism, the study employed a convergent mixed-methods design involving third-year mathematics students from two purposively selected institutions. Data were collected using a validated 26-item questionnaire (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.93) and interviews. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and a one-sample binomial test, while qualitative data were analysed narratively. The findings revealed that unstable internet connectivity, high data costs, limited institutional technological support, and inadequate interactive learning resources significantly affected students' learning experiences. The study recommends strengthening digital infrastructure and expanding institutional support to improve equitable and effective distance and online mathematics education in Nigeria.
