Yukti as a Scientific Reasoning Tool in Ayurveda
Abstract: Yukti holds a special place in Ayurvedic knowledge as the principle of rational reasoning that combines various causes. Charaka sees Yukti as an independent Pariksha (Pramana), and many classical commentators regard it as Pramana-Sahayabhuta, which supports the use of other valid ways to gain knowledge. This article explores the concept of Yukti, its status in understanding, and its use in diagnosis, treatment, pharmacology, preventive medicine, education, research, and other areas. Yukti brings together knowledge gained through Aptopadesha, Pratyaksha, and Anumana into logical clinical decision-making. It acts as a tool for scientific reasoning by following a clear process of observation, logical analysis, hypothesis creation, therapeutic planning, and outcome assessment. Additionally, its focus on personalized treatment, blending clinical expertise with available evidence, and making decisions based on individual patient needs aligns closely with evidence-based medicine and personalized healthcare principles. Therefore, Yukti stands out as one of Ayurveda's key contributions to medical reasoning. It provides the intellectual basis for rational, scientific, evidence-informed, and patient-centered clinical practice.
