A Correlational Study to Assess the Prevalence of Dog Bite Among Children and Awareness of Prevention and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Parents at Selected Community, Bangalore
Abstract: Dog bites are a major public health concern worldwide, especially in underdeveloped nations where rabies is still endemic. Rabies is a lethal viral disease transmitted mostly through dog bites that kill thousands of people each year, with children being the most vulnerable. "Rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease" that affect more than 150 countries and territories. Dogs are responsible for the great majority of human rabies deaths, accounting for up to 99% of rabies transmission to people. Objectives: Primary objectives1. To estimate the prevalence of dog bite among children.2. To assess the level of parental awareness regarding prevention of dog bites and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) among parents. Secondary objectives3. To assess the association between the prevalence of dog bites among children and selected demographic variables.4. To evaluate the association between parental awareness regarding prevention and post-exposure prophylaxis with selected demographic variables. Methodology: Study Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the epidemiological profile, management, and outcomes of dog bite cases. Study Setting: The study was carried out at the Emergency Department of BGS GIMS, Data were collected from patients presenting with dog bites between [November, 2025to February 2026]
