A Study on Skill Development and Self- Employment: Identify the Gaps, Role of RSETIs
Abstract: This paper examines the role of skill development in improving self-employment opportunities among rural youth in Nellore, India, with special attention to the contribution of Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs). The study discusses the importance of India's demographic advantage, national skill development policies, and partnerships between government institutions, industry, and financial organizations in creating sustainable livelihoods. Using a descriptive and diagnostic research design, data were collected from 500 trainees through structured interviews, focus group discussions, and case studies. The findings show that a large share of the trainees were young adults, many of whom had completed secondary or higher education but still faced limited employment opportunities. The study also highlights the participation of socially and economically disadvantaged groups, reflecting the inclusive nature of RSETI programs. Access to relevant training, timely bank credit, and market-oriented courses emerged as key factors supporting successful self-employment. The paper recommends expanding RSETI coverage, strengthening institutional collaboration, improving industry-aligned training, increasing awareness of government support schemes, and promoting continuous research to make rural skill development more responsive to changing economic needs.
