Effectiveness of a Digital Language Laboratory Add-On Course for Enhancing English Communication and Employability Skills in Jammu Kashmir

Dr. Mohd Tahir Amin Khan, Dr. Liyaquit Ali

Abstract: Purpose: This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Communicative English and Language Lab Skills Add-on Course, delivered through the Digital Teacher Language Laboratory, in enhancing undergraduate students' English communication skills, soft skills and employability skills in a government degree college in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative one-group pre-test?post-test design was adopted. Twenty undergraduate students participated in the intervention, while forty-six students completed a structured perception questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-tests, effect size (Cohen's d) and reliability analysis (Cronbach's alpha) in SPSS 26.0. Findings: The intervention produced a statistically significant improvement in students' communication skills. The transformed mean score increased from 31.00 in the pre-test to 80.60 in the post-test (t(19) = 30.12, p < 0.001), with an extremely large effect size (Cohen's d = 6.73). The questionnaire demonstrated excellent reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.975), and participants reported positive perceptions of improvements in pronunciation, fluency, communication confidence, presentation skills, workplace communication, soft skills and employability. Originality/value: This study provides empirical evidence on the effectiveness of a digital language laboratory add-on course in a government higher education institution located in the border region of Jammu and Kashmir, where such evidence remains limited. The findings support the integration of technology-assisted language learning into higher education curricula to strengthen communication competence and graduate employability.
