Exploring the Relationship Between Serum Micronutrients with Gallstone Disease in Adult Patients
Abstract: Gallstone disease (GSD) is a common hepatobiliary disorder influenced by metabolic, dietary, and biochemical factors. This hospital-based cross-sectional study evaluated the relationship between serum micronutrients and GSD among 65 adult patients attending the Department of General Surgery, Baba Raghav Das Medical College, Gorakhpur, India. Serum calcium, iron, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 levels were measured using standard biochemical and immunoassay techniques. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were performed using SPSS version 24.0. The study population was predominantly female (93.85%), with a mean age of 39.80 ? 13.45 years. Hypercalcemia was observed in 44.62% of patients, while 55.38% had low serum iron levels. Vitamin D deficiency was present in 63.08% of participants, and vitamin B12 deficiency was detected in 96.92%. These findings indicate a high prevalence of micronutrient abnormalities among patients with GSD, suggesting that altered calcium metabolism, iron deficiency, and deficiencies of vitamin D and vitamin B12 may be associated with gallstone disease. Routine assessment of these biochemical parameters may facilitate early identification and appropriate management of nutritional deficiencies in patients with GSD. Further large-scale prospective studies are required to clarify the causal relationship between micronutrient status and gallstone disease.
