The Shifting Ground: Industry 4.0 and India's Pharmaceutical Sector
Abstract: India's pharmaceutical sector keeps the world running. We manufacture one out of every five generic pills traded globally. Our vaccines reach over half the planet's population. Yet underneath that success sits a massive split in our industry. Some firms operate with cutting-edge smart manufacturing. Others? Still running the same batch processes their founders used decades ago. This paper examines that divide and what it means for India's future. We gathered insights from 324 industry professionals spread across Gujarat's major pharmaceutical hubs, looked at what the global market intelligence tells us, and tracked regulatory movements. The story isn't complicated: large enterprises are sprinting toward Industry 4.0. Most small and medium companies are stuck. They point to familiar obstacles-money problems, technical headaches, skills shortages. The numbers suggest India's smart manufacturing opportunity is worth around USD 78 billion by 2033, with pharma expanding at 10.5% per year. Government schemes like the PLI program (?6,940 crore committed) and CDSCO's regulatory overhaul are creating openings. Yet structural issues remain-API imports still dominate, systems don't talk to each other, and digital knowledge is scarce. We end with a practical roadmap for reaching full Pharma 4.0 capability by 2035.
