Occupational Health and Safety of Informal Workers in India
Abstract: The majority of the active workforce of the informal sector have been deprived of basic needs (Breman, 2013; Harriss-White & Gooptu, 2001). Generally, their immobile nature prevents them from uniting for their cause; also, their poor socioeconomic status and illiteracy deny them the ability to live a life of dignity. This paper endeavours to evaluate the current state of occupational safety available to workers in the world?s fifth-largest economy, seventy-five years after its independence. It critically examines India?s approach to OHS, analyses government initiatives through relevant laws and schemes aimed at safeguarding workers in various industries and workplaces, identifies the key challenges impeding the effective promotion of OHS, and explores prospective strategies to strengthen and elevate OHS standards across the nation.
