Role of Loans and Advances in Co Operative Finance: Insights from Mahalakshmi Urban Co Operative Credit Society, Haveri
Abstract: Cooperative credit institutions occupy a distinctive place in India's financial architecture, extending credit on terms that are often more accessible than those offered by conventional banks, particularly to middle-income households, small traders, and salaried employees. This paper reports on a study of the loan and advances function at Mahalakshmi Urban Co-operative Credit Society, Haveri Branch, undertaken to understand how the society's lending operations are perceived by the members who use them. A descriptive-cum-analytical design was adopted, with primary data gathered from fifty respondents through a structured questionnaire and supplemented by secondary material drawn from the society's own records and published sources. A Chi-Square goodness-of-fit test was applied to the satisfaction ratings collected, producing a calculated value of 21.20 against a critical value of 7.815 at three degrees of freedom and a 5 per cent level of significance, a result that leads to rejection of the null hypothesis and supports the conclusion that members are, on the whole, satisfied with the society's loan and advance services. Gold loans emerged as the most widely used product, and a large majority of respondents described the application and approval process as straightforward, rated the applicable interest rates favourably, and reported no difficulty in meeting repayment obligations. The paper closes with a set of practical recommendations directed at simplifying procedures further, expanding digital access, and paying closer attention to the smaller group of members who remain neutral or dissatisfied.
