Career Counselling and Skill Enhancement Programmes: Bridging the Gap between Academic Learning and Professional Success
Abstract: The transition from academic life to the professional world is a critical stage in an individual's career journey, often characterized by uncertainty, career indecision, and a mismatch between educational qualifications and labour market expectations. In the contemporary employment landscape, graduates are expected to possess not only academic knowledge but also employability skills, career adaptability, emotional intelligence, and professional competencies. Career counselling has emerged as a strategic intervention that supports students in understanding their interests, abilities, values, and career aspirations while facilitating informed career planning and lifelong professional development. This conceptual review examines the role of career counselling in enhancing career readiness, employability, and successful academic-to-professional transition. The study synthesizes contemporary literature on career development theories, counselling practices, employability skills, and skill enhancement programmes to explore how counselling contributes to self-awareness, career decision-making, confidence, resilience, and workplace preparedness. It also highlights the integration of digital career counselling, artificial intelligence-based assessment tools, mentoring, internships, and industry?academia collaboration in strengthening career development services. The review indicates that structured career counselling significantly improves students' participation in skill enhancement programmes, fosters the development of communication, leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, and enhances overall career adaptability. The findings emphasize that embedding comprehensive career counselling within higher education institutions can bridge the gap between academic learning and professional requirements, resulting in improved graduate employability and sustainable career success. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for universities, counsellors, policymakers, and researchers to strengthen career guidance systems and promote holistic student development in an increasingly dynamic global employment environment.
