Effectiveness of Public Awareness Methods for Non-Medical Causes of Maternal Deaths in Urambo District Council, Tanzania
Abstract: The global indicator framework for Sustainable Development Goals and targets of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development reveals maternal deaths to be a global issue and targets to reduce maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. Globally, the maternal mortality ratio was estimated at 197 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023. Africa accounts for approximately 70% of global maternal deaths, with an average maternal mortality ratio of 442 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023. Despite existing interventions, Tanzania still records 104 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, which is above the SDG target, and community knowledge on non-medical causes of maternal deaths remains low. The effectiveness of public awareness methods on these causes has not been adequately assessed. This study examined the effectiveness of public awareness methods for improving knowledge of non-medical causes of maternal deaths in Urambo District Council, Tanzania. A descriptive cross-sectional survey using a quantitative approach was conducted among 100 respondents through a structured online questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the reach and effectiveness of twelve awareness methods. The overall effectiveness score was 55.17%, indicating moderate coverage. Television (88%) and radio (80%) were the most effective communication channels, whereas newspapers, books, leaflets, websites, posters, and magazines each reached fewer than 50% of respondents. The findings suggest prioritizing broadcast media while strengthening complementary print and digital communication strategies. Engaging educated community members and parents as health advocates may further improve awareness of non-medical causes of maternal deaths and contribute to reducing delays in maternal care.
