A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Self-Instructional Module (SIM) on Knowledge Regarding Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV among B.Sc.(N) IV-Year Students in Selected Colleges of Nursing at Hassan

Roopa G. T.

Abstract: Background: Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a significant public health challenge, occurring during pregnancy, labour, delivery, or breastfeeding. Nursing students require adequate knowledge of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) to provide effective maternal and neonatal care. Objectives: To assess the pre-existing knowledge of IV-year B.Sc. Nursing students regarding PMTCT of HIV, evaluate the effectiveness of a self-instructional module (SIM), and determine the association between pre-test knowledge scores and selected socio-demographic variables. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (paired t-test and chi-square test). Results: In the pre-test, 82.5% of students had inadequate knowledge regarding PMTCT of HIV. Following the intervention, 72.5% demonstrated adequate knowledge in the post-test. A statistically significant improvement was observed in post-test knowledge scores (p
