The Exponential Rise of India?s Gig Economy: Drivers and Challenges of a Digital Revolution
Abstract: This paper examines the rapid expansion of India's gig economy and evaluates the technological, demographic, and institutional factors driving its growth. It discusses the increasing role of digital infrastructure, platform-based employment, and corporate demand for flexible labour while assessing the challenges experienced by workers and employers. Particular attention is given to income instability, algorithmic management, legal classification, skill development, workforce attrition, and emerging policy initiatives including skill passports and social security measures. The paper further explores recent government interventions and platform-level reforms aimed at improving worker protection and labour market efficiency. It concludes that although the gig economy offers substantial employment opportunities and contributes to economic growth, sustainable expansion requires stronger social protection, transparent platform governance, effective skill recognition, and balanced regulatory frameworks that benefit workers, employers, and the broader economy.
