Memory, Identity, and Home in the Writings of Kavita Nandan: A Study of an Indo-Fijian Diasporic Voice

Dr. Mahesh Jani

Abstract: The literature of the Indo-Fijian diaspora occupies a significant place within contemporary postcolonial and diasporic studies because it records histories of migration, displacement, cultural survival, and the continual negotiation of identity across geographical and emotional borders. Among the contemporary voices contributing to this literary tradition, Kavita Nandan distinguishes herself through a body of writing that intertwines personal memory with collective history. Her works examine the emotional consequences of migration while simultaneously exploring questions of belonging, cultural inheritance, and the persistent search for home. This paper presents an original literary analysis of Kavita Nandan's writings by examining recurring themes of memory, identity, exile, home, family, and cultural continuity. Rather than treating diaspora merely as geographical displacement, the paper argues that Nandan redefines diaspora as an evolving psychological and cultural experience in which memory becomes an active force shaping identity. Her literary imagination reflects both historical consciousness and intimate personal reflection, enabling readers to understand migration as an emotional as well as historical phenomenon. The study further analyses Nandan's poetic style, narrative voice, symbolic imagery, and representation of Indo-Fijian history. It demonstrates how her writings contribute to the broader discourse of diaspora by transforming inherited memories into contemporary literary expression. Through this process, Nandan emerges not merely as a diasporic writer but as a chronicler of cultural resilience whose works illuminate the complex relationship between homeland, migration, and identity.
