Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange Using Aloe Vera-Modified TiO? Under UV and Solar Irradiation

Abstract: This study investigates the photocatalytic degradation of two organic dyes, Methylene Blue (MB) and Methyl Orange (MO), using aloe vera-modified titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst under both UV and solar irradiation. The modification of TiO2 with aloe vera extract through high-temperature calcination at 850°C for 2 hours was employed to enhance photocatalytic activity. Experimental results demonstrated that 0.75 g of modified TiO2 achieved the highest degradation efficiencies: 91% for MB and 75% for MO under sunlight exposure for 1 hour. The study also compared the performance of TiO2 and TiO2/ZnO composites applied as paste coatings on beaker walls, which showed reduced efficiency (45-55% for MB, 27-34% for MO) due to light shielding effects. These findings align with established literature on TiO2-based photocatalysis and demonstrate the potential of bio-modified photocatalysts for sustainable wastewater treatment applications. The degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with optimal performance observed at higher catalyst concentrations and direct catalyst-dye contact.
