Mirror Neurons: The Neural Architecture of Empathy and Social Connection - A Systematic Review of Mechanisms, Connectivity, and Clinical Implications

Dr. T Sailesh Kumar, Dr Saranya S Kumar, Gangothri S Kumar, Dr Rijin Mohan

Abstract: Background: The discovery of mirror neurons has provided a biological framework for understanding empathy, imitation, and social cognition. These specialized cells bridge the gap between self-perception and the observation of others. Objective: This systematic review synthesizes current knowledge on mirror neuron function, its integration with the Default Mode Network (DMN), the role of neural oscillations, and its implications for neurological phenomena such as synesthesia and phantom limbs. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, this review analyzes neurological records and archival data to evaluate the systemic impact of mirror neuron activity. Results: Mirror neurons are localized in key motor and emotional centers, interacting with the DMN to facilitate social understanding. Their activity is modulated by external fields and intrinsic ion dynamics. Conclusions: Understanding the mirror neuron system is essential for developing therapies for psychiatric disorders and fostering social harmony.

Keywords: Mirror neurons, synesthesia, psychiatric disorders
