Safety Innovations in Dental Rotary Instruments: Current Technology, Challenges, and Future Directions

Dr. Sonam Bansal, Dr. Aryan Agrawal

Abstract: Dental rotary instruments are indispensable in modern dentistry, enabling precise cutting, polishing, finishing, and endodontic procedures. However, conventional rotary systems are associated with risks such as iatrogenic soft tissue injury, thermal damage, aerosol generation, instrument fracture, and accidental aspiration or ingestion. Recent technological advances have focused on enhancing patient and operator safety through intelligent control systems, improved materials, integrated sensors, and digital technologies. This review discusses the current safety innovations in dental rotary instruments, identifies existing challenges, and highlights future directions, including artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, smart handpieces, and selective tissue-cutting technologies.

Keywords: Dental rotary instruments, patient safety, smart handpiece, electric micromotor, AI dentistry, soft tissue protection, aerosol control, instrument fracture
